17 THOUGHTS ON “SHE MAKES LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE

  1. I’m more shocked at the $20 for the high-resolution images with printing rights. I don’t know a professional photographer who’d consider letting them out at all, let alone for that cheap.
Well, that’s not true. I did work for one who was considering selling the negatives of his older film work just so he’d have the storage space available. This was years after the images were taken and he wasn’t sure how much to ask. I never followed up to get his eventual decision.
    • I know someone that sells their negatives for around $1000 for the first purchase, and $150 for each one after the first purchase.
  2. Sad thing is weddings only happen once, no re-takes. These wannabes are wrecking the trade. Can’t their spouses find some other hobby for them, like finger painting or something?
  3. Now you know why I stopped doing portraits and weddings, closed my studio, but kept my lights. Now I only work when they WANT me, by reputation, and pay my rates. I work less, but earn more net.
You cannot compete on price, so don’t. Just recognize, you may not make a living in a devalued marketplace.
    • And the really sad part is that people don’t recognize a bad photographer when they’re interviewing them. I can’t tell you how many couples I meet with who never ask me about my equipment, whether I have back up equipment, my storage or anything about my credentials! I hand out a sheet of talking points when I meet with wedding clients and tell them “This is what you need to ask any photographer you talk to!”
    • I was wondering that too. I have a wix site and I really like how easy it is to update and redesign on occasion. I’m a photographer, not a web designer, and I don’t have the money to pay a web designer to create a site. I like my site!
    • It’s not the be all and end all, but a free e-mail service e-mail address and a WIX domain name/address as opposed to your own domain name is just not as professional looking.
Especially when domain names and “proper” web hosting is so cheap – and mail can be configured to go to Gmail, and Gmail can be set up to send mail so it looks like your domain name is the sending address.
  4. If you think the picture in the top-left corner is an example of your best work, then you are not a photographer.
Not to dismiss all of the other problems here, but this raises one question in particular: Why are so many fauxtogs totally oblivious to backgrounds? To my eye, that patch of sky is more attention-grabbing than the (footless?) couple, and this sort of thing shows up here over and over again.
  5. Wow. facebook, gmail AND wix? Must be a pro, right?
It disgusts me that these talentless hacks are devaluing photography by calling themselves photographers and charging less than operating expenses to stroke their egos. Why can’t the become caterers or something?????
  6. If you’re going to charge only $20 for a CD/DVD of hi-res images with printing rights, why bother to have those other packages (also priced way too low.) Why would a customer buy anything other than the CD? Dumb!
